The National picture
It is estimated that every year over 100,000 children under the age of 16 run away or go missing from home or care. And whilst the majority are safely found, their time spent “running” presents serious risk and potential for harm with one in six young runaways sleeping rough and one in twelve suffering harm whilst away.
For more information about running away and research that has been carried out in the area, please check out The Children’s Society website: www.childrenssociety.org.uk
Nationally the issue of running away has been recognised with the publication of the Young Runaways Action Plan in June 2008, the introduction of a new National Indicator for runaways in April 2009 and the launch of new government guidelines for runaways in June 2009, in which ReRun is cited as an example of good practise.
