Danny's Mum BACK TO LIST
I married young, to get away from home and when my husband started shouting at me, then hitting me I didn’t know who to turn to and it just carried on getting worse. I knew it was bothering the kids – hearing all that going on so eventually I left. I couldn’t take the kids with me but I knew they’d be OK, as he’d never even raised his voice at them and, when I saw them at weekends, they told me everything was fine. He was very clever as there were no bruises or signs of injuries on them at all. When it all came out the kids came to live with me and we got a place to live. We were OK for a few years until Danny started going off the rails. It began with bunking school, cigarettes and alcohol but soon progressed to cannabis & then harder drugs. He was ashamed of his behaviour and used to run off; I never knew where he was and although lots of people tried to help, Danny wasn’t really interested. By 16, my son was an alcoholic & heroin addict. I’ve never stopped loving him but I just couldn’t have him with us any more especially after he stole money from us.
I’d had workers coming in and out of my house for years telling me I should do this and that; but nothing made much difference. ReRun sorted Danny out with somewhere to live which was a real relief because I never knew where he was and they tried to help him sort out his drugs use; but its hard – he’d got into such a mess – it’s never going to be sorted out quickly. The main thing is that he’s got someone he can talk to who he trusts and I know I can call the worker if I need to. Me and Danny are talking now and he comes back to see his sisters. Danny's Mum
